December 27, 1998
Web posted at: 10:24 p.m. EST (0324 GMT)

SAN FRANCISCO (CNN) -- Combining common domestic hints from Heloise and secret technology from underground nuclear weapons tests, scientists from the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory and the University of California-Berkeley have devised an innovative steam-cleaning method to clean up hazardous waste sites.

The breakthrough quicker picker-upper could soon soak up one- third of the 1,300 Superfund sites in the United States. One noxious California mess is expected to be cleaned up in two years -- 998 years ahead of schedule. CNN's Rusty Dornin reports.
