High-tech holiday gifts
Web posted at: 1:40 p.m. EST (1840 GMT) (CNN) -- Do you have a high-tech loved one on your holiday gift-buying list? If so, there are some choice offerings among the latest items in electronic fare. Sharp Electronics is offering an ultra-portable notebook computer that runs a slimmed-down version of Windows. It's called the Mobilon Handheld PC, or the Mobilon TriPad. "You can use it in tablet mode, it can also be used in kind of a clam-shell mode as well as in an easel mode for presentations," explained Russ Chinoy of Sharp Electronics. Sharp is also offering an innovative gadget that sends electronic mail, or e-mail, over the telephone. The device is called TelMail.
"This is a great stocking stuffer because now you can have portable, affordable e-mail in a small, hand-held device without any connectors," said Sharp's John Brandewie. Brandewie explained that a confirmation tone lets the sender know the e-mail has been properly delivered. Another gadget, an Internet telephone by Aplio, has the potential to save you money on your long distance telephone calls. While some Internet telephones work through computers, this one is different. "It digitizes your voice, compresses your voice and sends it over the Internet like your PC could do," explained Aplio CEO Oliver Zitoun. "But here you can do it without any computer, just this box and your phone."
If you're looking for a gadget the entire family might enjoy, technology analyst Cheryl Currid recommends a digital camera.
"There's no better way to capture the moment than to capture it in a camera, offload it to a PC, save it forever," Currid said. ( Digital cameras cost from about $150 to $1,000 dollars, and offer the convenience of creating photo quality prints at home. Correspondent Rick Lockridge contributed to this report.
