The new mouse in town is a touchy-feely phantom

New technology makes VR a 'touching' experience

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (CNN) -- Virtual reality software and hardware already makes it possible for us to see and hear things that don't really exist, except in cyberspace. Now an Albuquerque-based laboratory has taken the experience a step further by adding a sense of touch.

Sandia research is also concentrating on enhancing the senses of sound and sight.

Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories simulate expensive tests with the phantom

The technology already is being used by the laboratory to simulate such scenarios as a fuel fire spreading inside a missile warhead, or a fire erupting aboard an airplane. Such fire simulations can be repeated as often as desired, in all sorts of variations and at very little cost compared to a real life test.

Goodyear has already used some of the technology to develop new tires, and one Sandia student used haptic feedback for a virtual game of pool. ( 340 K/30 sec. AIFF or WAV sound)

By providing an alternative to mouse-clicking to navigate cyberspace, the technology eventually may lend even routine personal computing a whole new "feel."

Corespondent Rick Lockridge contributed to this report.
