(IDG) -- Users who are eager to try out the Linux operating system but don't have a lot of technical know-how may have a friend in LinuxOne. The software firm says it has released a version of Linux that has been simplified - especially for first-time users.

Called LinuxOne Lite, the software is aimed chiefly at curious PC enthusiasts, and may also be popular with educators and businesses who want a version of the open-source operating system that's easy to set up and use in a training environment, the company says.

LinuxOne Lite has been designed in particular to be easy and quick to install, and doesn't require users to know how to partition a hard disk, as other Linux distributions commonly do, the company says.

The program is based on LinuxOne - the company's full Linux distribution - and occupies about 600M bytes of hard disk space.

The software can be ordered from LinuxOne's Web site, at http://www.linuxone.net/. The product is available for an introductory price of $9.95, plus $10 for shipping and handling in the U.S., according to information on the company's Web site.

Corel also has created a version of Linux aimed at first-time users that is designed to be easy to install and run. Corel plans to launch its distribution, called Corel Linux, during the Comdex trade show in Las Vegas later this month.
