(IDG) -- Commerce Department Secretary William Daley announced on Monday that a digital divide summit will be held on Dec. 9, featuring participants from the federal government, the technology industry, the civil rights and nonprofit communities, grassroots organizations and the general public.

Daley made the announcement via taped remarks presented at the Networks for People '99 Conference, sponsored by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration's Telecommunications and Information Assistance Program (TIIAP). TIIAP is a highly competitive grant program that promotes the availability and use of advanced telecommunications in the public and nonprofit sectors.

The summit will be held at the Commerce Department and will feature a roundtable discussion with representatives from all sectors, and six breakout sessions examining technology in underserved areas, work force development and more.

Registration materials for the digital divide summit are available online at www.ntia.doc.gov/ntiahome/digitaldivide/summit/register.html.
