From... Dell, Midwest Micro Celeron-500s debut
August 3, 1999 by PC World Staff
(IDG) -- PC chips just keep getting faster, and the release of systems to show them off is accelerating as well. Midwest Micro and Dell are releasing budget Intel Celeron-500 systems this week, and PC World's PC WorldBench results attest to their speed. The two systems consistently beat out PCs containing their sibling chip, the Celeron-433, but AMD's KIII-450 comes close to the new Celerons in PC WorldBench races. Midwest Micro's 500-MHz Celeron-powered MWO-500C earned a PC WorldBench score of 204, while the Dell unit posted a 214. A similarly configured Polywell Poly K6-III earned a 217 WorldBench score, not a significant lead. A similarly configured Celeron-433 Gateway E1200 posted a 199.
Midwest Micro's MWO-500C, priced at $1249, is available now. It comes with 64MB of memory, a 15GB hard drive, and a 17-inch monitor. The machine comes with a 17X-to-40X CD-ROM drive, modem, Fast Ethernet card, Altec Lansing ACS-33W speakers, and Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI 128 Wavetable sound card. Windows 98 Second Edition and Microsoft Office 2000 Small Business Edition are preinstalled. Dell's Celeron-500 is the $1391 Dimension L500C. It has an integrated Intel 810 chip set, as well as 64MB of memory, a 13GB hard drive, and 40X CD-ROM drive. It comes with a 17-inch monitor, Direct AGP video adapter with 4MB of video memory, Creative ES 1373 integrated sound board, Harman/Kardon HK 195 speakers, a modem, and a network interface card. Windows 98 Second Edition and Microsoft Office 2000 Small Business Edition are preinstalled.
