(IDG) -- Silicon Valley's San Jose, Calif., is the nation's high-tech industry leader, according to a survey that ranked hundreds of metropolitan areas by the number of high-tech firms they contain.

San Jose, home of Hewlett-Packard Co., Yahoo! Inc. and Intel Corp., had 10 technology industries represented, giving it the greatest high-tech corporate density in the country. High-tech industries examined in the survey included computers, data processing, electronics, aerospace, pharmaceuticals and communications.

Dallas, home of GTE Corp., ranked second, and Los Angeles ranked third.

The report was intended to give government officials and business leaders a handle on factors that drive the growth of local technology companies.

Boston, Seattle, Washington, D.C., Albuquerque, N.M., Chicago, New York and Atlanta rounded out the top ten.
