(IDG) -- The Palm operating system is still early in its development, so some of the programs on this list may remind you of the early days of DOS. Still, there are some fairly sophisticated titles that extend your handheld's word processing functionality and let you manage your schedule more efficiently. But don't take my word for it -- try them out for yourself. If you'd like to look at all of the programs in the FileWorld library, click "More Palm-OS extras," link below.

  1. BlackJack Solitaire: Here's two games in one package. Try to get the highest score for each row without going over 21 before the time runs out.

  2. Convert-It: A variety of measurement categories offer more than 170 international conversion factors.

  3. 3 Level Tic-Tac-Toe: Who cares if nobody wins? At least it's in 3D.

  4. Adventures of Dakota A: Run and jump through deadly traps and pits with this customizable adventure game.

  5. CityTime: See the time anywhere around the globe.

  6. MagicText: Easily manipulate text by adding multitap and drag-and-drop capabilities to the Palm's word processor.

  7. AportisDoc Reader: View text from documents of any size. Supports a wide variety of electronic books and documents, including reference works, weather reports, HTML pages, transit schedules, travel guides, and sports schedules.

  8. Action Names: Enhance the built-in PIM features of your Palm device.

  9. AlarmHack: This simple utility patches your Palm OS alarm code, allowing you to modify the alarm ring in your date book.

  10. ACCalc: This expandable calculator supports several plug-ins, including an interest calculator and measurement converter.
