FCC unveils Web page with guidelines for parents
(IDG) -- The Federal Communications Commission Tuesday unveiled on its World Wide Web site a page (www.fcc.gov/parents_information) aimed at educating parents on the value and potential of the Internet. The page also is geared toward teachers and anyone trying to chaperone kids as they venture online, according to an FCC spokeswoman. "It is for anybody watching out for kids," she said. The idea for the page grew out of a letter from the U.S. Commerce Department, which urged the FCC to help parents come up with Internet safeguards for use in their homes. In debuting the site, FCC Chairman William Kennard endorsed the development of a scheme to coax schools and libraries into establishing their own Internet filtering strategies, possibly as a condition to receiving money from the E-Rate program. E-Rate is a mammoth federal effort to underwrite costs associated with wiring needy schools and libraries to the Internet. "As schools around the country think about how they are going to use technology in the classroom, they should also think about how to use it responsibly," Kennard said in a statement. "I am eager to hear the thoughts of parents, teachers, principals and librarians on this matter."
