transportation architecture project that would integrate traveler information, traffic management and transit services. The state also is working on a joint project with California to evaluate and improve transportation systems for the regions rural routes.

At the Intelligent Transportation Society of America conference here, Portland outlined its urban ITS project, dubbed TransPort. The effort has integrated several transportation subsystems to handle traffic management and monitoring, incident management and traveler information from one transit management information center.

The city plans to enhance services to riders in the coming year, including the application to provide bus arrival times to passengers waiting along bus routes, according to Dennis Mitchell, the advanced transportation management systems project manager with Oregon's Department of Transportation.

Already ahead in ITS, Portland's 850 "smart buses" are equipped with Global Positioning System and Automated Vehicle Location technology.
