TOKYO (IDG) -- Privately-held Online Music Company said Thursday it will use a World Wide Web site to make it easier to license music from record companies.

Mill Valley, Calif.-based OMC said it is beta testing Licensemusic.com and has teamed up with over 60 small record companies from around the world. The music labels include Alligator Records of the U.S., Prestige Records from the U.K. and Turkey's Topkapi Records, the company said.

Visitors to the Licensemusic.com Web site can listen to samples of music streamed by RealNetworks' RealAudio technology, license individual tracks and download them in one of several file formats including MP3 (Motion Picture Experts Group, Audio Layer 3), OMC said in a statement.

All transactions can be performed online. The site is targeted at commercial users of music, including television and film studios in addition to digital producers, the company said.

OMC's move comes amid a barrage of new business and partnerships grappling to find viable ways to distribute music over the Internet. A grassroots rise in the use of MP3 format, which compresses music making it easy to download, has recently sparked interest in Internet music distribution among players at all levels of the music industry.

The Licensemusic.com system uses search and delivery technology from Web designer Icon Medialab International of Stockholm, Sweden, and digital watermarking technology from Bellevue, Wash.-based ARIS Technologies.
