From... Home PC penetration hits 50%
February 11, 1999 by Tom Diederich (IDG) -- Falling home computer prices are credited with nearly doubling the number of U.S. households that have a PC over the past three years, boosting the rate from 27% in 1995 to 50% last year, according to a study from Dataquest.
Dataquest, in San Jose, Calif., said the PC is well on its way to becoming a "standard household appliance." Although some of the first-time buyers over the past three years were from households at lower socioeconomic levels than previously, the increase in penetration was seen across all economic segments, the report said. "U.S. PC penetration into the home market has been consistent over the past couple of years," the report said. "In 1998, the home market increased 7% over 1997 when 43% of U.S. households had a PC." In 1996, that rate was 36%, Dataquest said.
