From... Techies make more than business managers
February 4, 1999 by Kathleen Ohlson (IDG) -- A study on compensation and benefits for Internet professionals yielded two surprises -- the high salaries technology managers draw and the low availability of stock options for most Net workers, said the Association of Internet Professionals (AIP).
AIP's first Compensation and Benefits Report revealed technology managers racked up an average $73,382 per year, while their business counterparts, such as corporate CEOs and chief information officers, finished third, averaging $71,010, the study said. Technology managers are getting bigger paychecks because relative few individuals have the technology knowledge online firms need today, said Andrew Kraft, AIP's executive director. Software developers pulled in the second-highest salaries, averaging $72,503, the Los Angeles-based association said. Employees involved in media production ($48,909) and design/layout ($46,734) were at the low end of the pay scale, AIP said. The report also smashed the illusion that Internet workers are sitting on a pile of stock options; less than half of those surveyed reported that they received stock options as part of their compensation, the study said. With so many Internet-based start-ups around today, people believe that a "chuck of stock options [are] out there, and that's not the case," said Lauren Shanahan, a spokeswoman for AIP. The report was co-sponsored by WebStaff, the Web staffing division of MacTemps Inc.
