Women & middle class hit the Web with own agenda
by Maryann Jones Thompson
(IDG) -- As more Americans go online, the Web's domination by affluent males
has been undercut by an increase in women and middle-class surfers.
The most recent wave of findings from the Pew Research Center
documents not only demographic shifts but a diversification of
interests that has accompanied the change. In short, more people are
online for pleasure rather than business.
* "new" users include respondents who used the Internet for the first time during the past year.
** "experienced" users have been online for more than one year. Findings for 1998 are based on a telephone survey of a nationwide sample of 3,184 U.S. adults conducted from October 26, 1998, to December 1, 1998.
