(IDG) -- The Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) is launching a campaign today that aims to encourage consumers who shop online to check out Web sites' privacy policies.

The nonprofit CDT was to unveil its Privacy Watchdog program at a morning news conference at its Washington headquarters, after which the program was going live online, the CDT said in a statement yesterday.

Privacy Watchdog will encourage online shoppers to look for and evaluate privacy policies of electronic-commerce sites. The CDT has been pushing the Internet community to regulate itself, and it urges sites to prominently display privacy policies on Web pages.
