Panasonic debuts rugged notebooksToughbooks are designed to be water resistant and dust proof for use outdoors.November 18, 1998 by Terho Uimonen (IDG) -- LAS VEGAS -- Panasonic introduced its Toughbook 27 series, the latest addition to the company's line of rugged notebook PCs, at the Comdex Fall 1998 show.
Powered by a 266MHz Pentium MMX processor, the Toughbooks are designed to be water resistant and dust proof for use in demanding outdoor conditions. The active-matrix display uses a filter that reduces light reflection to less than 1 percent, providing clear viewing even in bright sunlight, Panasonic said. With a full magnesium-alloy casing and shock-mounted 4GB hard drive, the Toughbook is designed to withstand a three-foot drop, the company said. Panasonic also has included support for some of the most popular wireless communications technologies, such as American Mobile/ARDIS and BellSouth Wireless Data/RAM. Available now, the Toughbook 27 comes with 32MB of main memory and a 12.1-inch or 10.4-inch screen. Prices start at $3999. The Toughbooks weigh 8.2 pounds, measuring 11.8-by-9.5-by-2.3 inches.
