(IDG) -- LAS VEGAS -- GTE Internetworking, a division of GTE Corporation, on Tuesday launched a free Web-based e-mail service to Internet users worldwide.
GTE Web Mail allows users to send, receive, store, and forward e-mail messages from any computer with a Web browser, without needing a third-party Internet access service. GTE Web Mail will market the free service to all consumers, not just existing GTE telephone or Internet customers, the company said.
GTE undertook the project to extend its brand name and introduce customers to its other services, GTE officials said. To help underwrite the cost of Web Mail, GTE is placing banner advertisements.
GTE is partnering with iName, a provider of e-mail and communications technology, to offer the service.
