(IDG) -- LAS VEGAS -- In the first half of 1999, Zyxel Communications will ship two routers with distinctive abilities for sharing a high-speed Internet connection with coworkers via a local-area network. (Designed to link networks, a router is a device about the size of a large modem that includes PC-like hardware and special software.)

By March, Zyxel will ship the Prestige 100 EF router that lets you connect a cable modem or high-speed Digital Subscriber Line modem to a LAN, according to Daniel Liu, assistant vice president of sales marketing for the company. The device is expected to sell for about $450 and will likely be the first device of its kind, Liu said.

Currently, if you own a cable or DSL modem and want to share the device with other users on a network, your choices are limited and expensive.

One option is to install two Ethernet cards into a PC that is dedicated to managing the traffic between the modem and the LAN, Liu said. One card connects to the LAN and the other connects to the high-speed modem. The Prestige 100EF, which contains hardware, software, and two Ethernet connections, performs the same function as the dedicated PC and Ethernet cards for less money.

In addition, Zyxel also expects to ship an ISDN router that bonds two 128 kilobit-per-second ISDN lines into a single 256-kbps data pipe or up to four 64-kbps lines that can be shared across a LAN, Liu said. The Prestige 200 is expected to ship some time in the second quarter of 1999 and cost about $700, less than the cost of two 128-kbps ISDN routers, he said.
