Corel unveils WordPerfect Office 2000
(IDG) -- LAS VEGAS -- Software maker Corel here Monday at fall Comdex took the wraps off the beta version of its WordPerfect Office 2000 desktop application suite. With its latest version of WordPerfect Office, Corel's mission is to provide a complete, compatible business solution, said Mike Cowpland, Corel's chief executive officer at a press briefing Monday. "We are not locking users into one proprietary vendor; we are making the suite compatible with other platforms such as Linux and Microsoft's Office Visual Basic for Applications," Cowpland said.
The upgrade is targeted at both small businesses and large corporations and is designed to meet the needs of a variety of users, such as teachers, lawyers, doctors, and IT managers, Cowpland said. Compared to previous versions, WordPerfect Office 2000 is easier to use and to navigate, he added. Core applications included in the suite are the WordPerfect 9 word processor, the full-featured spreadsheet Quattro Pro 9, Corel Presentations 9, and the CorelCentral 9 information manager. Over the next few months Corel plans to announce a number of different editions of the WordPerfect Office 2000 suite. Additional elements expected to be included in some of the editions are the Paradox 9 relational database, Corel Print Office small business publishing software, Dragon Systems' voice recognition technology NaturallySpeaking, the Trellix Web authoring and presentation tool, and NetDocs, a server-based Internet publishing tool. With Trellix 2.0 and NetDocs, users of WordPerfect Office 2000 will be able to use the suite as a communication tool for publishing to the Web, said Frank Tomey, a product manager for WordPerfect. Users of WordPerfect Office 2000 can generate content with the WordPerfect word processor or with Trellix and with NetDocs, Tomey explained. "Users do not have to be a graphics designer -- the application handles all linking and layout automatically for you," he said. WordPerfect Office 2000's NetDocs tool is used to bring content on to the Web page and to update Web content automatically, Tomey said. The enhanced Quattro Pro 9 spreadsheet offers greater file size, easier manipulation of data, and more powerful tools to "turn numbers into knowledge," Tomey said. It allows users to share spreadsheets, consolidate changes, and collaborate more easily, he added. Quattro Pro is compatible with Excel spreadsheets and others. WordPerfect Office 2000 is in a good position to increase its market share with 22 million active users in the U.S. alone, Cowpland said. "Corel is now in a position of strength to grow stronger. "WordPerfect Office 2000 beats Microsoft's Microsoft Word easily," Cowpland said, specifically in price and licensing agreements. WordPerfect Office 2000 is slated to ship in the second quarter of 1999.
