From... Yahoo, BT to offer pay-as-you-surf planNovember 10, 1998 by Kristi Essick PARIS (IDG) -- Yahoo has teamed up with British Telecommunications to offer a pay-as-you-go Internet service in the U.K.
Dubbed Yahoo Click, the service will allow users to get connected to the Internet without signing up for a monthly service, Yahoo said in a statement. Available to users throughout the U.K., the service will cost 1 pence (US 1.65 cents) a minute on top of regular local phone charges. The cost of local calls in the U.K. varies depending on the time of day, and isn't billed at a flat rate as it is in the U.S.
Anyone can use the new Yahoo Click service, whether they are a customer of BT or not, Yahoo said. After downloading a bit of software from Yahoo's U.K. and Ireland site, users call a local number to connect to the service and charges are automatically added to their phone bills. Essentially, the number called to access the Yahoo Click is similar to other types of elevated-per-minute calls, such as some calls to help and reservation lines here. Included in the service are a 24-hour customer helpline, charged at local rates, and free Web-based e-mail. However, the software needed to get started won't come on a CD-ROM or floppy disk, so users will need to have access to the Internet in order to start using the service. After installing the software, users just click on an icon on their screen to connect to the Internet, Yahoo said. BT already offers its own pay-per-minute surfing plan, called BT Click Plus, which also costs 1 pence a minute on top of local call charges. It's unclear whether the deal with Yahoo will affect BT's Click Plus service, or whether both will continue to co-exist alongside one another. BT could not be reached for comment.
