From... Netscape buddies up to IE4 fans
October 2, 1998 by Paul Heltzel (IDG) -- Famous for their quarrels, Netscape Communicator and Microsoft Internet Explorer are now buddying up. Sort of. Netscape announced this morning a new download called TuneUp for IE that adds Communicator features to IE 4. Attempting to bring IE users to Netscape's portal site, the company is offering a free 100KB download that lets you change IE's default search engine to Netcenter, and adds Communicator "Smart Browsing" capabilities to the Microsoft browser.
Smart Browsing is a key element in Communicator 4.06 (final release) and the 4.5 beta. In the latest versions of Navigator, a "What's Related" button generates a list of sites related to the one you're viewing. The add-on will let IE4 display related sites in a left-hand pane, and will offer another Smart Browsing feature, the ability to access Web sites or content channels by typing regular words into the browser's location bar. Earlier this month, Netscape made another move to attract IE users to Netcenter with the second beta of Communicator 4.5 browsing suite. That software can make Netcenter your default search and home page--not just in Communicator but also in IE4, if that's available on your system. The add-on will be available for download at the Netscape Web site before the end of October, according to Ken Hickman, Communicator product manager. "You can deploy the service without upgrading a new browser," Hickman said.
