(IDG) -- The Internet2 project has been expanded to include a middleware focus that will work on developing advanced network applications.
The Internet2 Middleware Initiative was announced Tuesday, as was word that IBM will supply high-speed storage devices to the project's Distributed Storage Infrastructure Initiative (I2-DSI). StorageTek announced it has signed on as a corporate sponsor.
The middleware portion of the project will define network services to serve as the centerpiece for advanced research and education applications being developed at universities participating in Internet2 development. Services will include digital audio and video, storage systems, security, multicast and directories with Internet2 member organizations developing standards-based implementations.
Besides StorageTek's support for I2-DSI, that part of the project also will have help from Cisco, Sun and Novell.
Internet2 is a project of the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development, a consortium of more than 100 U.S. research universities, nonprofit research centers, government agencies and industry members developing new points-of-presence (POPs) that will connect the university campuses with a high-speed network operating at 2.4G bits per second by 2000.
IBM will also contribute supercomputer and video technologies to the International Center for Advanced Internet Research (iCAIR) as part of the Internet2 Digital Video Network initiative, it was announced today. That aspect of the high-speed network project will develop and deploy advanced technology to create a national higher education video network service.
