From... Printing and faxing come to handheld devicesSeptember 30, 1998 by Warren Ernst (IDG) -- Windows CE users have always had limited, if not nonexistent, printing and faxing options for both handheld and palmtop PCs, but the latest releases of bFax and bPrint, from bSquare software, change that. BSquare has also just announced new releases of bTrack, a time, expense, and mileage tracker; the bReady Publisher and bReady Viewer combination, an information manager and e-text publisher and viewer; and bMobile News, a Usenet newsreader.
BFax Pro 4.0 picks up where the OEM version of bFax on Hewlett-Packard's HP620-LX leaves off. First, Pro 4.0 has user-customizable cover pages. But more important, since the program works via a printer driver, you can fax directly from any application that supports printing, including Pocket Excel and ClickNote. "There isn't any other program that lets you fax an Excel worksheet," maintains Michelle Manson of bSquare Development. BFax uses print-capture technology from bPrint 2.0, which has features far beyond those native to the Windows CE 2.0 operating system. BPrint can queue print jobs, preview documents, and send documents to more printers -- and do it all fast. While it is not currently able to generate color output like WestTeck's JetSet, Manson feels that users value fast output over limited color capabilities. Scaled-down versions of these products, bFax Express 3.0 and bPrint 2.0, are available for handheld PCs, providing the only send, fax, and printing capabilities available for the smaller platform. BTrack 2.0 can generated printable or faxable reports via bPrint or bFax, available separately, but information can also be sent via e-mail for integration with most corporate reporting systems. Finally, bReady 2.0 Publisher allows you to create bookmarked textual information such as catalogs, manuals, or simple indexed texts on a desktop PC, and then download the information to the Windows CE machine to be viewed by the free bReady Viewer. BMobile News 3.0 now supports both palmtop and handheld machines, on- and offline reading, and transmission and reception of binary attachments, memory permitting. Be prepared to scroll around quite a bit though. The products are not currently available as a bundle, but evaluation and full versions can be purchased and downloaded from the vendor's Web site.
