IBM rolls out PCs for telecommuting parents

(IDG) -- IBM on Thursday released four additions to the Aptiva E Series line in the U.S., focusing on parents who telecommute and work from home.

Three of the Aptiva models -- the E3U, E5U and E6U -- include IBM's ViaVoice speech recognition software, the company said. As the technology matured and the processor was able to handle it, ViaVoice became much more usable, said Brian Connors, IBM Aptiva brand vice president.

The new models also come packaged with educational software aimed at families, and with Internet connectivity options for telecommuters.

The E3U, which sells for $1099, comes with a 350-MHz Advanced Micro Devices K6-2 processor with 100-MHz front-side bus, 64MB of RAM, an 8GB hard drive, 4MB of SGRAM, a 14X-32X CD-ROM drive, and software including ViaVoice and Lotus SmartSuite.

Priced at $1399, the E5U is run by Intel's Pentium II-350 chip with 100-MHz front-side bus, 96MB of RAM, an 8GB hard drive, 4MB of SGRAM, a DVD-ROM drive, and software including ViaVoice and SmartSuite.

The $1799 E6U is furnished with an Intel Pentium II-400 chip with 100-MHz front-side bus, 128MB of SDRAM, a 13.5GB hard drive, 4MB of SGRAM, a DVD-ROM drive, and software including ViaVoice, SmartSuite, World Book 1998 Multimedia Encyclopedia, and Edmark's Thinkin' Things 1.

The final addition, the $899 E2U, features a 333-MHz AMD K6-2 processor with 512KB Level 2 Pipeline Burst cache, 48MB of RAM, 6GB hard drive, 4MB of SGRAM, a 14X-32X CD-ROM drive, and SmartSuite.

These Aptiva models also feature a 56-kbps modem and a choice of Internet browsers, access to IBM Global Services, a 100-hour free trial with America Online for the first month, Netscape Navigator with 128-bit encryption, IBM's "Aptiva on the Net" that lets owners to surf the IBM site without needing an Internet service provider, optional IBM Ethernet cards, software including Norton AntiVirus and ConfigSafe, and the IBM Update Connector, which downloads select software files, drivers, and utilities.
