The computer maker announced alliances with Internet service provider AT&T WorldNet and Web portal powerhouse Excite to provide new Dell customers with an immediately accessible personalized start page. "One of our goals is to have every Dell PC up and running in fifteen minutes out of the box, and on the Internet within five minutes after that" said Paul Bell, senior vice president and general manager of Dell's home and small business group.

This initial access does not require full registration or even a credit card. Instead, AT&T WorldNet provides access free of charge for the first month, with subsequent monthly access available for $19.95. Users also have the option of selecting a different ISP at any time during the trial period. Dell will be working with other ISPs in the future, Bell said.

Because the PC set-up and online registration processes are integrated, when a new user first logs on, they will immediately have a personalized Web start-up page provided by Excite -- complete with targeted news and information. The personalized page will also feature direct links to Dell services, support, and registration, Bell said.

Dell today also announced a joint initiative with SBC Communications to eventually equip Dell Dimension desktop PCs with high-speed ADSL modems and services. Implementation of ADSL services is planned for early next year in select cities in Texas and California, the company said.

Dave Gallemore, SBC vice president of strategic marketing, said the alliance with Dell has two significant elements for future ADSL users.

"First, ADSL-configured PCs can greatly simplify and speed deployment to our customers, and can also reduce overall installation costs," Gallemore said. "And it simplifies the buying process -- a single transaction with Dell can not only get them connected to the Net, but get them connected at ADSL speeds."

In May, Dell announced similar deals with U.S. West and Cisco to provide ADSL-ready Dimension PCs later this year to customers in select cities.
