From... Listen to worldwide TV and radio broadcasts with EarthTunerSeptember 18, 1998 by Stan Miastkowski (IDG) -- Want to see what's hot on the jazz scene in Taiwan, or brush up on your Spanish by watching the streaming video of a steamy soap opera from TV Paraguay? Both broadcasts and many more are just a few seconds away with EarthTuner.
This $22.95 program from Digiband lets you surf the world's radio and TV stations, and you can check out a free 15-day trial version. EarthTuner includes RealPlayer 5.0, plus an interface that makes it easy to find what you're looking for. You can click anywhere on a worldwide map to find out what's available, use a well-designed search engine to find specific types of music or programming, or just browse through EarthTuner's database, which includes more than 1000 stations. (If you're more interested in domestic sources, you can also get all U.S.-based radio and TV stations.) The company updates its database weekly, and you can download the free updates for an unlimited time. There are also 12 buttons to which you can assign your favorite finds. (You can, of course, also use the browser's bookmarks.) Both sound and video quality, even from far-flung locations, were surprisingly good on my 56-kbps Net connection, but don't expect anything like broadcast-quality video. If you're lucky enough to have higher-speed access, so much the better. EarthTuner does include lots of options for tweaking your audio and video, but it worked fine for me without fine-tuning. EarthTuner does come with banner ads for Webcasting stations, but those are minor annoyances. Also be warned that, yes, this program can waste scads of your time if you let it.
