Top 10 system-diagnostic tools for your PC
These popular utilities help resolve system problems and keep your computer tuned the way you want.

- BCM Diagnostics: This tool helps you diagnose
problems with your PC running Windows 95. It
can test a host of components including the
processor, memory, video, sound, modem,
floppy drive, CD-ROM, and hard disks. It also
has a resource monitor.
- CheckIt Demo: Try this demo of the popular
CheckIt Diagnostics. Features include a
defragmenter and an IRQ conflict checker.
Active Update is disabled in this trial version.
- Kernel Toys for Windows 95: The utilities in this
set of "power toys" from Microsoft include:
Conventional memory tracker; MS-DOS mode
configuration wizard customization tool;
Windows time zone editor; Windows 95
keyboard remap; Windows process watcher;
and Windows logo key control for MS-DOS
programs.
- NSTL Ymark2000: Check your system for Year
2000 compatibility using this test routine from
NSTL. (Note: It may cause problems with some
Compaq DeskPros, so read the instructions.)
- RegClean: This release of the Registry utility
fixes a few problems and creates an "undo.reg"
file so that you can undo the changes you
inadvertently make to your system registry.
- RegRepair 2000: Has your computer has ever
broken down so seriously that you had to
reformat your hard drive and reload all your
software? This utility may be what you need to
avoid that in the future. It can systematically
repair and correct problems with Registry files,
corrupt font files, and other glitches. (Note: Both
download files are required for this program.

- SiSoft Sandra: Find out what Windows is doing
with your system resources with this
easy-to-use utility. It supports all new CPUs,
including the MMX and Pentium II varieties.
- Tune It!: This powerful OCX will help you tune
your Windows 95 desktop and provide you with
a lot of system information. Monitor system
resources and system events, launch screen
savers, shut down the computer, or reboot
Windows.
- Tweak UI: Adjust your Windows user interface,
including menu speed, window animation, and
Internet Explorer. Features include automatic
log-in, desktop icon show and hide, mouse
adjustments, system file cleanup, and more.
Simply right-click tweakui.inf to install.
- X-Setup: Clear histories and caches, change
setup options for Start menu items, change how
your CD-ROM player works, and change
defaults for documents and Windows itself.
