Hackers break into N.Y. Times Web site
The New York Times Web site

(CNN) -- Hackers with an apparent grudge and a raunchy sense of humor periodically took over The New York Times Web site Sunday morning, renaming it HFG (Hacking for Girls).

The hackers alleged they broke into the Times Web site on a challenge from a woman who is writing a book about hackers. They said the woman, who they implied also works for a firm that provides Web security for the Times, challenged them to break into a major site. They alleged that she was setting them up to be arrested. hacked

Most of the hackers' remarks appeared in "comment tags," which can be seen in the source material but not on the Web page.

In a self-parody, the hackers type in all capital letters, playing the role of stereotypical computer geeks. But in their comment tags, the hackers type almost flawlessly and quote literary figures, such as Voltaire.

The tags include such remarks as "'immature kids' were able to bypass... $25,000 firewalls (and) bypass the security put there."

In quite personal and insulting language, the hackers attack the woman, other Times Web security personnel and the news organization itself.

The hackers repeatedly express anger at the arrest and imprisonment of a fellow hacker named Kevin Mitnick.
