Tots grill Microsoft's Ballmer

September 8, 1998

(IDG) -- Microsoft President Steve Ballmer earlier this week faced a tough crowd of future users as the company launched Encarta Reference Suite 99.

"Has Microsoft met all its goals in the computer world?" one schoolboy asked.

"No," Ballmer said. "We think we haven't even begun to get started."

"Someday, will computers get so advanced that they can take over the world?" asked another, more paranoid, tyke.

"Computers can only do what humans tell them to do," Ballmer responded, chuckling.

The question-and-answer session ended before any of the children at San Francisco's California Academy of Sciences museum could interrogate Ballmer about the company's business practices, a matter the U.S. Department of Justice is investigating.

Microsoft Encarta Reference Suite 99 combines the Encarta Encyclopedia 99 Deluxe Edition, Encarta Virtual Globe 99 and Microsoft Bookshelf 99. The package will be available later this month for about $100, and a $30 rebate coupon will be available.
