Web site offers free legal aid for small businesses

(IDG) -- Question: "You have a lawyer up to his neck in sand. What do you have?" Answer: "Not enough sand."

Okay, so lawyers are susceptible to getting beach debris kicked in their faces these days. But what do you do when you're stumped with a legal question? You'd probably like an answer for something less than a few hundred an hour.

People who own small businesses may find it useful to visit Nolo Press's Web site this month. Nolo Press is the original legal self-help specialist. It's made up of staffers -- many of whom have legal degrees -- who hate lawyers every bit as much as the rest of us. This publishing house is a one-stop-shop for publications and software covering everything from creating a will to doing your own divorce. In the process of selling its wares, Nolo hands out quite a bit of free and low-cost information -- ruffling the feathers of legal eagles around the country in the process (see "How Legal Is Legal Advice on the Web," link below).

Advice worth much more than it costs

This month Nolo is featuring on its Web site a special section for small businesses, "Taking the Big Worries Out of Small Business." This solid legal primer offers extensive articles on business accounting, legal concerns of selling direct, ways nonprofits can do good works and still make a buck, the laws governing a person's right to operate a home business, and employer rights and responsibilities.

It's hard not to like Nolo Press: More than most commercial sites, its Web site offers regular features with free advice and help. For example, in addition to the business articles, Nolo provides a chapter from its book Money Troubles that includes a comprehensive listing of the legal consequences of ignoring debts.

And lest you get the idea that the company takes itself too seriously, click the shark icon: You'll enjoy a nice sampling of lawyer jokes.
