From... InfoBeat delivers classified ads directly to your in-boxSeptember 7, 1998 by Cathy Kenny
You can search the Classifieds section for vehicles, job openings, real estate, computers and software, general merchandise, apartment and vacations rentals, roommates, and even personal ads. InfoBeat will send you e-mail updates as new ads are found. The ads are provided to InfoBeat by Classifieds 2000, a division of Excite.
But there is a catch: In exchange for this free service, you must tolerate advertisements in any e-mail generated by the service. You're also required to provide InfoBeat with a few pieces of demographic data, including your e-mail address, gender, date of birth, and Zip code. InfoBeat then turns this information over to its base of advertisers who in turn begin to target you for additional advertisements. If you can live with all the ads, the service is worth checking out. To set up personalized classifieds, go to InfoBeat's Classifieds section. Indicate the type of classifieds you want to search, the state you want to search in, the item you are looking for, and a price range. You'll then see a listing of classifieds that meet your search criteria. Review the classifieds listing, click the button entitled Get Future Listings by E-Mail, and InfoBeat will save your search criteria. Now, every day for the next nine weeks (excluding holidays) InfoBeat will send you alerts via e-mail. You can stop the e-mail notification at any time by deleting the saved e-mail search. You can also search the Classifieds section for any online auctions taking place and then make bids on those items via e-mail. InfoBeat also lets you subscribe to late breaking news, weather, sports, stocks, and entertainment, among others.
