Madden NFL 99 the best PC football game bar none

September 4, 1998

From...

(IDG) -- For nearly a decade, EA Sports' Madden Football franchise has blitzed its way into the hearts of armchair quarterbacks the nation over. And now Madden 99 -- with its new Franchise Mode, Internet Coaching Mode, and true 3D polygonal characters -- may have what it takes to be the greatest football game of all time.

Madden's developer, Tiburon Entertainment, has promised all kinds of new features for the 1999 season, and it looks like it intends to deliver. Even from what I've seen of early PC-version builds, Madden 99 looks like it has enough goods to make a lot of pigskin fanatics very happy this winter.

Tiburon has added new moves and animations to assist the transition from a sprite-based engine to one that's polygonal. These include the newly added juke move, one-handed catches, and improved defensive swim-moves in true 3D, not to mention the newly improved "offensive-spin-to-avoid-Eric Swann's-big-ass" animation--which, unlike previous ballerina-style spin-moves, actually avoids tackles.

Couple that with adjustable passing modes, team-specific NFL playbooks, and true-to-life player heights that actually affect passing plays, and you have what it takes to thwart any gameplay skeptics.

While I could write a whole article on 99's new Franchise Mode, I'll keep it brief. It allows you to take your favorite team through a decade or more of gruesome NFL seasons. Players get old and retire, while rookies and free agents are brought aboard to fill gaps in your roster. Madden's Franchise Mode is just like NCAA Football's Dynasty Mode...on steroids!

Just can't wait...

Diehard fans won't have to wait long: the PlayStation version is in stores now and the PC version's on its way. Look for it. And watch your back when coaching your team online, 'cause I'll be lurking around, and I've got the Arizona Cardinals to watch mine.
