Automotive industry revs up online

(IDG) -- After three years of planning, the largest industry-wide virtual private network (VPN) is supporting live traffic.

The Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) today announced that its Automotive Network Exchange (ANX) was finally up and running. But now users face the challenge of getting connected to the network.

While the network is currently supporting official ANX traffic, some test traffic is still on the network, explains Joe Boyd, a telecommunications analyst at Ford Motor. But he added that by Nov. 1, ANX will only support official ANX customer traffic.

The VPN that will link Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Caterpillar and Paccar to more than 10,000 suppliers only has only one supplier connected today. But many more are in the process of getting online now that they can buy transport services from official ANX service providers.

The AIAG today gave three service providers the ANX seal of approval. ANX users can now sign up to use Ameritech, Bell Canada or EDS' IP transport services to connect to the ANX network. Several other ISPs, including AT&T, MCI, Sprint and Concentric Network are in the process of becoming Certified Service Providers for the ANX network.

Now suppliers can access their largest customers and business partners via a single connection. But there is still much legacy application migration that needs to be developed before any one supplier is supporting 100% of its industry-bound traffic on the ANX.
