Top 5 most popular business utilities

August 31, 1998
Web posted at: 12:15 PM EDT

(IDG) -- When research firm PC Data recently released its list of the best-selling software from the first half of this year, we dug into the numbers and found some surprises. Among them: In five days, Microsoft's latest Windows upgrade surpassed the sales of every other product sold for six months in 1998. And virus fear puts two bug catchers in the top 5. From the home office in San Francisco, California, here are the best-selling business titles thus far in 1998.

1. Microsoft Windows 98 Upgrade. Even though the list covers sales through the end of June only, this seemingly nonessential upgrade sold 530,000 copies in six days. Total sales between June 25 and 30 were more than $62 million.

2. Microsoft Windows 95 Upgrade with Internet Explorer 4. Bringing up a strong second with more than $55 million in sales, Windows 95 (including upgrades, licenses, and stand-alone full versions) still packed a punch in 1998.

3. Network Associates VirusScan 3. This program sold 336,501 copies for a total of $11.2 million. In our March issue, VirusScan received high marks for missing only 2 of 271 viruses found in general circulation, though we noted that its updating procedure is a bit complex.

4. Symantec's Norton Utilities 3.0. Users trying to maintain their PC's good health--or get it back on its feet--bought 263,751 copies of this suite. "Despite the utilities included in Windows, Microsoft has failed to erase the need for nuts-and-bolts software that helps people keep their PC running correctly," said Roger Lanctot, director of research at PC Data. "People are still looking for third-party suppliers for dealing with software hassles."

5. Symantec's Norton Antivirus 4. Norton Antivirus 4, a PC World Best Buy (March 1998), pulled down $8,867,204 and sold 223,067 copies. The software's detection and removal rates for both wild and zoo viruses were the best we tested, and it got top honors despite the fact that it could have done better with our infected boot record.
