From... Wells Fargo tests online billingJuly 24, 1998 by Brian McWilliams (IDG) -- Wells Fargo Bank on Wednesday announced that it is the first bank to pilot test Web-based bill presentment. The San Francisco-based bank said it has begun a six-month trial of the service involving employees of the bank and its partner, MSFDC, a joint venture between Microsoft and First Data Corporation.
When it goes live in the first quarter of 1999, the service will allow Wells Fargo customers to view and pay their bills online using a Web browser. Vice President Susan Weinstein said it'll be the "ultimate convenience" for bank customers. "You will be able to go online and pick up all your bills immediately," says Weinstein, "no more getting them in dribs and drabs in the mail, hoping that you remember where you put them. They are right there, in one place. With a few keystrokes, you pay it and it's done. You will be able to either pay it immediately or pay it later, pay it all or pay it in part. You have total control. You don't have to remember that it it's not due for three weeks and you have to mail it in three weeks. You can do it online today and you don't have to worry about it ever again." In addition to using MSFDC to provide information from its partcipating billers, Wells Fargo says it expects to add other bill consolidators so that its more than 400,000 online banking customers can potentially handle all of their bills over the Internet.
