SAN FRANCISCO (CNN) -- Some 12,000 people gathered in San Francisco this week to celebrate a language most of us know little about: Java.

Java is a programming language that helps the world's computers communicate universally. It's such a coveted capability that many competitors of Java's developer, Sun Microsystems, are trying to create their own versions of the language.
