NEW YORK (Reuters) - Electronic mail via America Online Inc.
was knocked out by hardware problems Wednesday afternoon, the
world's number 1 online service said.
E-mail was knocked out around 2:30 p.m. EST. The problems
were believed to have been fixed by about 4 p.m., America Online
spokesman Rich D'Amato said.
"We tried to bring the e-mail system back up at that time,
but it didn't happen," D'Amato said in an interview.
The hardware problems kept users from logging onto the
service, which has about nine million subscribers.
The hardware fixes allowed log-ins, but e-mail service
remained down. At 5:30 p.m., software problems added to America
Online's problems.
Users already logged on could still surf the Internet, use
online chat rooms and read news -- but as far as e-mail was
concerned, the line was dead.
