LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- The Mars Pathfinder probe has beamed
back another series of spectacular pictures from the red
planet, scientists said Wednesday.
Scientists presented their findings at a news conference that
focused on the data gathered over the past two weeks from the
excursion of the Sojourner rover in the area known as Rock
Garden, as well as from weather data and soil analyses.
Scientists reported about Sojourner's tussle with the rock
known as "Hassock" and showed pictures of the probe literally
driving over "Wedge" as part of the ongoing soil and rock
experiments.
A newly enhanced superview of an area depicted in previous
data transmissions showed a new color scheme of the Mars
surface near the lander. The data revealed structures that
had not been discovered before.
Weather specialists said that on Tuesday, they had registered
an atmospheric pressure of 6.86 millibar, the highest ever
measured on Mars.
Pathfinder camera operators showed a series of pictures
enhanced with various color filters. The Pathfinder data
produced Mars sunsets and cloud images in spectacular colors.
Dust in the Mars atmosphere created a kind of bluish hue
around the sun, scientists said. Scientists also presented
pictures of blue cloud formations in the Martian sky.
