NEW YORK (CNN) -- World Wide Web surfers will soon be able to
download live football games, check player stats and
instantaneously send e-mail messages about the game in 90
different languages.
At least that's what industry insiders said this week at
Internet World '96, one of the largest Internet conferences
in the world.
Conference representatives said 1997 will be the year of the
Internet, in which cyberspace becomes more lifelike though
advanced graphics and such features as
three-dimensional chat rooms where users can communicate
using animated characters.
"Onward and upward for the Internet," said conference reveler
Alan Meckler.
At the heart of the cyberspace revolution are software and
technology advances. For years, Internet advocates have
promised a speedy Web with no delays and real-time
information. But at times, instead of moving at warp speeds,
cyberspace still slows to a crawl.
The technology is finally catching up and everything is about
to change, according to the soothsayers at Internet World
'96.
For instance, JavaSoft announced it has further developed its
Java platform and unveiled a new series of Java-based
products that will enhance online processing.
"We are giving developers and Web masters the tools they need
to create the next generation of Web server applications,"
said Jon Kannegaard, vice president of JavaSoft.
Other advances would enable a user to watch an entire live
football game without delay. Randy Handelman of VDOnet
added, "You would also be able to dive into the Web site and
learn more about the players or the statistics or see their
schedule."
Software designers have even created technology that allows
online users to browse the Web and send e-mail in more than
90 languages.
And those who want to shop in cyberspace will enjoy enhanced
search engines that will help track down favorite items, be
it a fly fishing rod or a business suit.
