From Correspondent Brian Nelson

(CNN) -- They are no substitute for the doctor, but some Internet sites can give you answers to common medical problems. In cyberspace, the doctor is always in.

But Internet surfers looking for health advice, beware. On- line medical information is a medical supplement, not a doctor substitute.

You can start with a search of the Internet under the category of "health," which will yield thousands of sites ready to give out information and advice on what ails you.

For kids only

kidsdoctor

From stomach aches to poison ivy, KidsDoctor is a useful resource for parents with questions about their children's medical needs.

Do a keyword search for a list of informative articles to read. The site has information on more than 200 children's health topics.

KidsDoctor also offers the practical knowledge of pediatrician Lewis Coffin. The good doctor doesn't want to replace your own family practicioner, but his friendly "on- line" manner makes it easy to get helpful, family-oriented medical information.

An alternative to traditional medicine

drweil If you're into alternative methods of healing, visit the HotWired Healthclinic and ask Dr. Weil any question. This Harvard-trained M.D. and author of several best-selling alternative health books, specializes in mind/body interactions and medical botany . One of the most interesting features of the Web site is the Doctor Weil Database, a comprehensive collection of home remedies people can use to treat common aliments -- remedies Dr. Weil says are safe, natural, effective and inexpensive.

Medical information at your fingertips

houseccall America's Housecall Network is a good place for general medical information. It's an online medical encyclopedia with more than 30,000 pages of helpful health and medical articles.
