ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- An experimental dance group has a unique new partner -- called a "virtual dancer" -- that allows a computerized figure on a screen to mirror the images of a human dancer.

The program that drives the computer figure is a collaborative effort between the Atlanta Ballet and the Georgia Institute of Technology. It is fusing ballet and modern dance with the cutting edge in interactive software, not to mention giving audiences a new experience.

The Atlanta Ballet's John McFall is optimistic about the future of virtual dancing, envisioning a time when it will be an accepted part of the dance community. (136K AIFF or WAV sound)

To create the computerized image, a human dancer is wired to sensors that connect him to a computer and capture his movements as he dances. From there, the figure can be costumed and manipulated with simple keystrokes. (545K QuickTime movie)

This experimental mix of art and science is bringing another dimension to "Time Piece," a new work choreographed by David Parsons that uses computer-generated movement to explore the evolution of man.

"The story is an abstracted work. It's kind of like technology and evolution at the same time," explained Parsons.

"Time Piece" features a gigantic virtual dancer that is projected onto two large screens behind the human cast, serving as a dramatic counterpart to the live performers.

From backstage, computer engineers manipulate elements of the virtual dance, from backgrounds to costume changes.

Georgia Tech's Mike Sinclair is intrigued by the possibilities for computer costuming and the possibility of using it on real performers.

"What happens if we could make those costumes kind of electronic and you can change them on the fly ... (you) don't have to run off stage to change costumes," Sinclair said. "All you have to do is change the computer program, and bingo, they're wearing a different costume ... flowing water or flames ... whatever."

As the virtual dance technology improves modern dance companies will have new directions with an endless number of possibilities.
