Between the cowboys and
the indians, the latter definitely win in the style
stakes this season. As Native American influences
have flooded the catwalks, designers can't seem to
get enough feathers, suede and tassels into their
collections.
As techno fibers look set
to take over, one corner of the fashion world is
keen on keeping things natural. The Indians' use of
heavy cottons and thick leathers has maximum
appeal, with the likes of
Anna
Sui and
Tom
Ford at
Gucci
going seriously ethnic. Feather and bead-trimmed
jeans, embroidered shirts, thongsand ponchos are
the essential ingredients for a western drama.
Followers of the fringe are
Veronique
Branquinho - queen of the poncho,
Issey Miyake
with his cut-out bikinis and
Valentino , whose shawls are as delicate as a spider web.
The rich, natural shades
of terracotta red, saffron yellow and splashes of
cobalt blue as used by the Indians are in perfect
harmony with today's penchant for bright colors.
One of the best things about this look is that
anyone can do it on a tiny budget. Simply sew on
your own feathers and beads, fringe your own
t-shirts and dona sexy choker. Pocahontas and
'How'!
