Gore's choice of Lieberman could hinder Democratic hopes of regaining Senate majority

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- If Al Gore wins the presidency, his choice of Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut as a running mate could pose an interesting problem for Democrats in their quest to regain control of the Senate: They could lose an otherwise safe seat.

Under Connecticut law, the state's governor gets to name a replacement. In this case, Republican Gov. John Rowland would almost certainly name a Republican to Lieberman's seat.

Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota expressed those concerns during the selection process as Gore considered several senators from states that also had GOP governors.

At the same time, Gore's choice of Lieberman, an Orthodox Jew known for his mild manner and principled stand on a variety of social and moral issues, brings a dynamic to the Gore ticket that, some observers say, could change the makeup of other campaigns across the country.

CNN Interactive's news analysis feature, y: why it matters, offers this look from CNN National Correspondent Bob Franken at these and other issues surrounding Gore's choice of Lieberman as his running mate.
