The advisers are fictional.
You are a member of the Soviet Politburo. It is October 1979, and Afghanistan's deputy prime minister, Hafizullah Amin, has just overthrown and killed your staunch ally, President Taraki. You had been conspiring with Taraki to get rid of Amin, whom you blame for provoking Islamic rebels with brutal tactics in Afghanistan's civil war. You also fear he is anti-Soviet -- especially now that he appears to have learned of your plot against him. The KGB suggests he may soon try to court Western favor. On the table is a plan to send Soviet troops into Afghanistan to oust Amin. This risks provoking an international backlash and some form of retaliation from Washington; but if you don't invade, you risk instability -- or worse -- in a strategically important nation on your southern border. What do you do?
