When you fall off the wagon
Getting under way on the New You project, I was certain of one thing: At some point, I'd fall off the wagon and have to figure how to get back on.

As folks could tell from this morning's segment, it happened Super Bowl weekend, at the office. My gracious colleague (who will remain nameless) brought in some leftover homemade Steelers celebration cookies. So I enjoyed not one, but four. And last week, my work hours were long in preparation for an American Association of Nurse Anesthetists meeting out of town. In five days, I missed not one but two visits with our trainer, Tasha.

Now what?

Time to just shake it off and resume the plan. What's begun over the past several weeks isn't undone by one day's treats or missed training appointments, or even one week's worth. Further, what's past can't be changed. So I might as well just get on with it: Resume the healthy diet, resume the night-owl workout plan, keep moving. Do what I know is the right thing, and the results should follow.

Dang Frank -

I didn't know an all out explaination was going to follow my tellin' on ya. All I was looking for was "Yea I ate the cookies -....and ...whatchu gonna do 'bout it?! LOL

Seriously, you've done a wonderful job with New You and you're to a point where you won't allow yourself to go too far off the beaten path. Some habits have solidified and some still need time & sweat. As far as I'm concerned, you've triumphed.

We'll talk bonus for this entry later.;)

It is all about a lifestyle change and realising that 'falling off the wagon' doesn't mean the end of the world. We're all human. I think you're doing really well to realise that you just get straight back onto that dang wagon. Many people fall off and give up.
As us Aussies say, good on ya!

Frank,

I hope you maintained your workouts and stayed the course at the AANA meeting. I know it can be difficult doing "the right thing" while traveling. I recommend you take your own advise and "shake it off and resume the plan." I hope to see you at the next meeting so I can see for myself how well you are doing in meeting your goals. Thanks for being such an inspiration.

My dear friend Monica (hi!) makes a good point ... namely how'd my American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) meeting out of town go last week.

Anybody who's been in professional or business association meetings knows the meeting drill ... arrive, eat, sit, eat, sit, eat, sleep, repeat. Not conducive to healthy living.

Good news, it went fine. Took early morning runs both days I was there. And diet-wise, I found that hotels and restaurants are willing to accommodate reasonable healthy requests, like having the dressing on the side, fresh asparagus instead of french fries (no kidding, fortunately I love asparagus) and fresh berries instead of decadent chocolate cake with chocolate mousse and chocolate ganache infused with chocolate creme chocolate. And when the fruit of the grape is being poured, nobody says you have to consume the whole thing.
