Britain remembers 7/7 bombings
Britain is remembering the victims of the London bombings one year ago, when four British bombers killed 52 people and injured 700 more on the capital's transport network. The July 7 attacks awoke the country to the reality of home-grown suicide attacks, and left an indelible mark on British society, ranging from tougher anti-terrorist laws to a complex debate about "Britishness." A national two-minute silence at midday will be the centerpiece of the commemorations. The silence will form a sharp contrast to the same time in 2005, when emergency sirens filled the air amid chaos, carnage and confusion as the grim truth of what had taken place became clear. And as the nation pauses to remember, police, politicians and the security services warn that the threat of further attacks remains real.
