New year faces upsurge of reports
In Jakarta, Indonesia, a hospital is overwhelmed with bird flu symptoms. In Thailand and Vietnam, the H5N1 bird flu virus has spread further among flocks, while cases of birds with the virus have been detected in Japan.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization says the spike in cases in the northern hemisphere winter follows a similar pattern to that seen over the past three years and was to be expected. The flurry of reports in the early weeks of 2007 come as health experts in the United States warn that country's health care system would be gravely challenged by a bird flu pandemic.
