How to maximize fun and minimize pain on the slopes
Below is a list of tips from the National Ski Patrol on equipment, clothing and how to enjoy yourself on the slopes. Read and learn.
Equipment
Besides boots, skis, poles or a snowboard, the National Ski Patrol recommends taking the following when heading to the slopes:
Sunglasses
Goggles
Sunscreen
Lip Balm
Ski or Snowboard lock
A bag to carry clothing, boots and extra equipment
Clothing
The ski patrol advises people to dress in layers, which allows you to remove or add clothing to deal with changing body temperature. Layering allows you to accommodate your body's constantly changing temperature. The ski patrol suggests wearing a turtleneck, sweater and jacket and wearing polypropylene underwear as it is warm but also driess quickly and absorbs sweat. In general, the patrol says you should avoid clothing that isn't water or wind-resistant, like jeans. Below is a list of suggested clothing from the ski patrol.
Long underwear
Ski pants or bib pant
Outer layer jacket (preferably waterproof/breathable shell)
Gloves or mittens
Neck gaiter
Turtleneck
Sweater or fleece
Socks or sock liner (1 thin to medium weight pair should do)
Vest (for insulation)
Face mask
Warm ups for after skiing or riding
Hat or headband
Other basic advice from the ski patrol is to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and curb alcohol consumption while on the slopes. They also suggest that beginning skiers and snowboarders take lessons and for all on the slopes to know their limits.
