Battle Group: The Kitty Hawk battle group includes the carrier with Carrier Air Wing 5 on board, the guided-missile cruisers USS Vincennes and USS Chancellorsville; guided-missile destroyers USS Curtis Wilbur and USS John S. McCain; destroyers USS O'Brien and USS Cushing; frigates USS Gary and USS Vandegrift; and submarine USS Bremerton.
Duties: The Kitty Hawk is the U.S. Navy's only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier, usually operating in the Asia/Pacific Ocean region. In 2001, the carrier was sent to the Arabian Sea but cleared of its aircraft to become a floating base for special operations aircraft.
