Deployed to: An official III Corps statement said the soldiers are being deployed to "support the global war on terrorism."

Units: Ordered on February 15, 2003 to deploy, the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment's 5,200 soldiers make up a highly mobile force equipped with heavy tanks, armored personnel carriers and helicopter gunships. The regiment also took part in the 1991 Persian Gulf War.

The 4th Infantry Division's (mechanized) 3rd Brigade, or "Iron Brigade," consists of two mechanized infantry battalions, a tank battalion, a combat engineer battalion, a field artillery battalion and a forward-support battalion. Support units include a reconnaissance troop, an air-defense battery, a military intelligence company and a signal company. The deployment orders, issued January 20, 2003, affect 3,500 soldiers from the division.

Duties: The 3rd Brigade is the mechanized infantry brigade for the 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized), which is based at Fort Hood, Texas.
